Sump Pump Installation Pricing: What Drives the Number

A basic sump pump replacement โ€” swap out an existing unit in an existing pit โ€” is a 1โ€“2 hour job. A new pit installation in a concrete basement is a half-day job with different equipment and skill requirements. Pricing them the same is a common mistake. This calculator separates the variables.

Pump Type Affects Material Cost More Than Labor

A submersible 1/3 HP pump (Zoeller, Liberty, Wayne) runs $150โ€“$300 at supply. A battery backup system with controller adds $300โ€“$600. A combo system (primary + battery) is $600โ€“$1,200 in material. Markup these properly โ€” 35โ€“50% on plumbing fixtures is standard. The customer is paying for your expertise in selecting the right unit, not just the part.

New Pit in Concrete โ€” Quote It Separately

Core-drilling a concrete basement floor for a new sump pit requires a core drill, jackhammer, disposal, and gravel fill โ€” add 3โ€“5 hours and $200โ€“$400 in equipment/disposal. Many plumbers underquote new pit installs by treating them like replacements. Always walk the basement before quoting.

Discharge Line Is Often Underpriced

A discharge run that exits through a floor joist and terminates 5 feet from the foundation is straightforward. A 30-foot underground run to a daylight point on the far side of the house is not. Price discharge runs per foot: $8โ€“$15/linear foot above grade, $15โ€“$25/linear foot underground (trenching included).

About This Calculator

Sump pump installation pricing depends on whether a pit already exists, pump type (submersible vs. pedestal), backup pump inclusion, discharge line routing, and check valve work. This calculator builds the complete install price from each cost component. Use it to price primary installations, battery backup add-ons, and combination systems accurately.
