Thermostat Upgrades: Where the Real Work Hides

The C-Wire Problem Kills Smart Thermostat Installs

A smart thermostat needs continuous 24V power to run WiFi, displays, and processing — the C-wire (common wire) provides this. Older systems were wired with only 4 wires (R, G, Y, W), no C. Without a C-wire, some smart thermostats use "power stealing" from the R and Y wires — this works sometimes, but causes random system cycling, short-cycling, or furnace board failures on certain systems. The right fix is running a new 18/5 or 18/8 wire from the air handler to the thermostat. The $15 fix (power adapter) solves it on some systems; on others it doesn't. Quote the proper wire run and note the adapter as an alternative the homeowner accepts at their own risk.

Heat Pumps Need a Different Thermostat

A standard 2-wire or 4-wire thermostat designed for gas furnace + AC will not work correctly on a heat pump system. Heat pumps require a thermostat with O/B (reversing valve) terminal, and must be configured for heat pump mode — or the system will run the auxiliary electric heat constantly instead of the heat pump compressor. This costs the homeowner 3–5× more in electricity. Always ask the system type before quoting, and verify the thermostat you're installing is heat pump compatible. Ecobee, Honeywell T6 Pro, and Nest (Gen 4) handle heat pump systems; not all cheap models do.

Millivolt Systems Require a Millivolt Thermostat

Old gravity furnaces, gas fireplaces, and some radiant systems run on millivolt power — a self-contained thermocouple circuit that generates 250–750 mV, no external power required. A standard 24V thermostat will not work and will likely damage the system if wired incorrectly. Millivolt thermostats are manual or basic programmable only — no smart thermostats work on millivolt systems without a separate 24V transformer added. If a customer has a gravity furnace and wants a smart thermostat, the honest answer is: it requires adding a 24V control circuit, which is a larger job. Price accordingly.
