Why Waste Factor Is the Most Important Number in a Material Order

A simple gable roof with no penetrations might generate 5% waste. A complex hip roof with four dormers, multiple valleys, and a chimney can generate 20%+. Ordering without waste factor means a second delivery trip, schedule delays, and a material mismatch if the supplier switches dye lots between orders.

The Pitch Multiplier

Ground-level square footage is not roof area โ€” pitch adds real surface. A 1,800 sq ft footprint at 5/12 pitch has 2,012 sq ft of actual roof. At 8/12 pitch, it's 2,306 sq ft โ€” 28% more material than the footprint suggests. Always apply the pitch multiplier before calculating squares.

What Else to Include in the Order

Ice and water shield: First 3 feet from eave (more in cold climates), all valleys, around all penetrations. Budget 1 square per 100 linear feet of eave + valleys.

Drip edge: All eave and rake edges. Measure total linear feet of perimeter.

Nails: Standard asphalt shingle installation uses approximately 320 nails per square (4 per shingle ร— 80 shingles). A 30-square roof needs ~9,600 nails โ€” two boxes of coil nails.

Starter strip: One linear foot per linear foot of eave edge. Some roofers cut 3-tab for starter; purpose-made starter strip is faster and more consistent.
