Steam, low-pressure hot water, or manual chipping—calculate the full cost to remove ice dams safely including equipment, access, emergency rate, and the damage inspection that protects you and your customer.
Chipping ice dams with a hatchet or chisel cracks shingles. High-pressure water blows off granules and can force water under the roofing. Steam at low pressure (under 15 PSI) melts ice dams without damaging the shingles underneath. It costs more in equipment (a commercial steam unit runs $3,000–$8,000) but it's the only method you can guarantee won't leave the customer with a damaged roof on top of their ice dam problem. If you're not using steam, disclose the shingle risk in writing before you start.
Ice dam removal means working on or near icy roofs and ladders in below-freezing temperatures with a pressurized steam hose. Falls from roofs in winter cause serious injuries. Your pricing should reflect the genuine risk: 1.25–1.5× your standard labor rate is reasonable and defensible. Include safety equipment time (anchor setup, ladder de-icing) in your hours. If conditions make the job unsafe—ice on the ground around the house, no safe ladder placement—do not proceed and document why.
After the ice dam is gone, someone needs to assess what it did: lifted shingles, cracked flashing, saturated insulation, water staining on decking. If you do that inspection, you write the repair estimate. If you leave without inspecting, the homeowner calls a different roofer in spring. An ice dam removal call is a minimum $300–$600 for a small residential job—and the follow-on repair can be $1,000–$5,000. Always include inspection as an add-on; almost no one declines when you explain what you're looking for.
