EV charger installs are one of the highest-volume residential electrician jobs right now โ and one of the most inconsistently priced. Some electricians quote $300. Others quote $2,500 for the same job. The difference is almost always about understanding what they're actually installing.
1. Wire and conduit. The run length and routing type dominate material cost. A 10-foot garage run with easy wall access uses $40โ60 in wire. A 150-foot buried run to a detached garage can use $300โ500 in wire and conduit alone.
2. Breaker and panel space. A 240V/50A circuit needs a 2-pole 50A breaker and two open slots. If the panel is full or at capacity, this becomes a subpanel or panel upgrade job โ completely different pricing territory.
3. Charger hardware. Your customer usually provides the EVSE (charger unit), but confirm before quoting. If you're supplying a hardwired unit, add $200โ600 to materials depending on spec.
4. Permit and inspection. Many jurisdictions require a permit for new 240V circuits. Budget $75โ200 for permit fees and the inspection trip. Include it in your quote โ surprises on permit cost destroy customer trust.
If a 100A panel is already pulling 80+ amps of load, adding a 40A EV circuit is not an add-on โ it's a panel upgrade job starting at $1,500โ3,500 depending on service entry. Identify this during the estimate walk, not after pulling wire.
