Standard pancake boxes and most plastic octagon boxes are rated for light fixtures only — typically 35–50 lbs static load. A ceiling fan generates dynamic load (torque and vibration) that a light box will not handle. NEC 314.27(C) requires ceiling fan boxes to be specifically listed for fan support, rated for the fan's weight and dynamic load. Installing a ceiling fan on a non-fan-rated box is a code violation and a liability. When you arrive and find a light box, the box replacement is not optional — it's required. Price it as a standard component of the job, not an upsell. A fan-rated brace box costs $12–$22 and takes 20 minutes.
Most existing ceiling light locations have a single switch leg — one cable that controls the light. To independently control the fan motor and light kit from wall switches (instead of a remote), you need a two-conductor cable to the fan plus a separate switch. If the homeowner wants separate wall control of fan and light, you're running a new wire or a wireless smart switch kit. Smart switch kits (Lutron Caseta fan controller, for example) work over existing single-wire runs — they're $80–$120 per kit but save you the wire run. Know the options before you quote; the customer who finds out on install day that separate wall control costs $200 more is not happy.
A ceiling fan on a vaulted or angled ceiling requires a ball-and-socket canopy adapter (most fans include this) and a downrod length calculated so the blades clear 7 ft above the floor — the minimum safe clearance. A fan installed too close to the ceiling on a vaulted surface wobbles and generates noise from air turbulence against the blades. Measure the pitch before quoting. Steep pitches (above 45°) may require a specialized angled mount or a different fan model. Most customers have never thought about this — you're the expert, so flag it upfront rather than discovering it on install day.
