Every AC tune-up is an inspection of a system that will either need replacement parts soon or will need full replacement in the next 1–10 years. A tech who does a tune-up and leaves without a written condition report missed the entire point of the visit. The condition report documents: refrigerant charge status, capacitor readings (weakening capacitors fail at the hottest day), contactor condition, coil cleanliness, electrical connections, and system age vs. expected remaining life. Handing the customer a one-page condition report with green/yellow/red items takes 5 minutes and positions you as the contractor who cares about the equipment, not just the service call revenue.
R-22 was phased out January 1, 2020. No new R-22 is being manufactured in the US. Current market price: $50–$100+ per pound versus $8–$15 per pound for R-410A. A pre-2010 system that needs a 3-pound refrigerant top-off could cost the customer $150–$300 in refrigerant alone — which is money spent on a system that's 15+ years old and will need replacement within 1–5 years. The right conversation: "I can top off the refrigerant for $X, but I want you to know this refrigerant is no longer made. If this system leaks again next year, you're looking at the same cost — or we can talk about replacement now and put that money toward a new system." Present both options. Let the customer choose.
Capacitors are the most common single-point failure in residential AC systems. They cost $15–$40 wholesale and take 10 minutes to replace. A capacitor reading at 70–80% of rated microfarad value is weakening and will fail — typically on the hottest day of the year. Testing every capacitor during a tune-up (start and run capacitors on both compressor and fan motor) and proactively replacing the ones that are marginal is the highest-value preventive maintenance action in the HVAC tune-up scope. A $40 capacitor replaced during a $150 tune-up prevents a $350 emergency call. That math is easy to explain to a customer. Present it as standard practice, not an upsell.
