Why Oversized Systems Cause More Problems Than Undersized Ones
An undersized system runs too long and doesn't quite cool the space on the hottest days. That's uncomfortable. An oversized system blasts conditioned air, hits setpoint in minutes, shuts off, and repeats โ never running long enough to pull humidity out of the air. The house feels clammy even when the thermostat says 72ยฐ. Short cycling also stresses the compressor and drives up energy costs.
Modern variable-speed equipment tolerates a slight oversize better than single-stage systems, but the fundamental problem of inadequate dehumidification doesn't go away just because you installed a better system.
What a Proper Load Calculation Considers
A full Manual J calculation is the gold standard. For quick field sizing, the key variables are:
- Conditioned square footage โ floor area only of heated/cooled space
- Climate zone โ design temperatures for heating and cooling in your location
- Insulation quality โ ceiling R-value, wall construction, foundation type

- Duct location โ ducts in unconditioned attic lose efficiency compared to conditioned space ducts
The Replacement Trap
The biggest sizing mistake in replacement work is "same size as what came out." The old unit may have been oversized when it was installed 15 years ago. It may have been installed before the attic was insulated or windows were replaced. Sizing the new system by what came out perpetuates the original error and misses 15 years of envelope improvements.
