GFCI Outlet Installation Cost: What Electricians Should Charge

GFCI outlet replacement is one of the most common residential electrical calls โ€” and one of the most inconsistently priced. One electrician charges $85. Another charges $220. The difference isn't profit margin; it's whether the price reflects the actual work or just a number someone made up years ago and never updated.

What Drives the Cost of a GFCI Install

Location matters more than the outlet itself. A bathroom GFCI where the panel is next door and the outlet is accessible takes 20 minutes. A garage outlet with a long circuit run, a buried conduit section, and a double-gang box install takes 90 minutes. Same outlet. Very different job.

Key cost drivers:

  • Labor time โ€” 20 min for a simple swap, 60โ€“90 min for a new circuit or difficult access
  • GFCI outlet cost โ€” standard GFCI runs $15โ€“30 at supply; TR (tamper-resistant) or dual-function AFCI/GFCI runs $35โ€“60
  • Circuit location โ€” whether you're protecting one outlet or multiple downstream outlets from one device
  • Permit โ€” most jurisdictions don't require a permit for a like-for-like GFCI swap, but new circuits need one

Pricing the Swap vs. the Installation

A replacement GFCI (existing box, existing wiring, accessible location) is a standard service call item. If your minimum service call is $125 and a replacement takes 20 minutes, your cost is the call fee plus a small parts markup. You're not billing an hour of labor for a 20-minute job if you have a trip charge model.

A new GFCI installation โ€” new circuit, new box, pulling wire โ€” is a different job. That's labor at your hourly rate for the actual time plus materials plus markup, plus potentially a permit fee to include.

When One GFCI Protects Multiple Outlets

This is underutilized and undersold. A single GFCI device installed at the first outlet in a circuit can protect every downstream outlet on that circuit. In a kitchen with 3 countertop circuits, that might mean 9 outlets protected by 3 GFCI devices instead of 9.

Price this correctly: you're installing fewer devices but providing full code-compliant protection. The labor is less; the value is the same. Don't underprice it, but don't artificially inflate it either.
